What is RTI?
RTI (or RtI - Response to Intervention) is a method of academic intervention used in the United States to provide early, systematic assistance to children who are having difficulty learning. RTI seeks to prevent academic failure through early intervention, frequent progress measurement, and increasingly intensive research-based instructional interventions for children who continue to have difficulty. It is believed that students who do not show a response to effective interventions are likely (or, more likely than students who respond) to have biologically based learning disabilities and to be in need of special education.
How to "Tier" your students?
The services determine the Tier.
Tears are fluid - students move up and down.
Tier I - All Students
Tier II - Done in classroom by the classroom teacher. Students are placed in small groups. The teacher works with each group during a certain planned time in the day.
Tier III - Push in or Pull out tutoring by the Reading Specialist, Math Specialist, ESL, etc. NO NEW TEACHING is going on during this time.
Tier IV - Refer to SPED (This gets done only after 2 - 3 years of working with students on other tiers.)

Grouping and Scheduling
Grouping - Every 6 weeks create a 10 questions quiz based on SEs (TEKS) taught in that 6 weeks. Students who missed 3.6A TEK will be in same group and so on.
Schedule - The daily schedule is set in a way where these people can come and work with the students on this tier. Math is taught at different times in different grade levels allowing for push in or pull out.
Schedule Example:
8-10:55 - Teaching
10:55 - 11:45 - Intervention
1. No new instruction
2. 25 min - math
3. 25 min - reading
4. In classroom small groups
5. Documented work (what are you working on with the students?)
6. Pull out / Push in / GT work / Stations
7. Cluster the students correctly
8. Provide for students on Tier I choice of activities
9. Problem that can happen - Students miss instruction - do not teach anything new!
11:45 - 3:30 - Normal School Day Continues
* In another grade level the intervention will be scheduled in another time to allow for specialists to come and visit with the students.
